OCHSNER REFRIGERANT

R513A – HFO/HFC MIX
REFRIGERANT AT OCHSNER

R513A is an azeotropic refrigerant mixture consisting of 56% R1234yf (hydrofluoroolefin) and 44% R134a (partially halogenated fluorocarbon). It combines a rare property in the current refrigerant landscape: non-flammable (safety class A1) while significantly reducing greenhouse potential compared to established A1 refrigerants. OCHSNER uses R513A in the particularly compact and quiet AIR HAWK 208 – a model specifically designed for use in densely populated residential areas and energy-efficient new buildings.

What distinguishes R513A

R513A has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 631 according to the 4th Assessment Report of the IPCC – the established reference value in the industry. Compared to R134a (GWP 1,430), this represents a reduction of about 56%. The ozone depletion potential (ODP) is zero. Thermodynamically, R513A operates with pressure levels and performance data close to R134a – a refrigerant that has proven itself over decades in chillers and air conditioning applications. In combination with the OCHSNER horizontal table evaporator technology and fully modulating inverter control, the AIR HAWK 208 achieves a SCOP of 4.46 in the highest energy efficiency class A+++ at a flow temperature of 35 °C.

Safety class A1:
what this means technically.

R513A is classified as safety class A1 according to DIN EN 378-1 – this means low toxicity and no flame propagation. In the current market of low GWP refrigerants for heat pumps, this combination is rare: Most low-GWP refrigerants are classified as A2L (slightly flammable) or A3 (highly flammable). For the AIR HAWK 208, this means: There are no special fire protection requirements from the refrigerant classification. The installation of the outdoor unit is carried out according to the general planning guidelines for air/water heat pumps, without additional installation restrictions.

Non-flammable (A1)

R513A is one of the few low-GWP refrigerants that are non-flammable. This eliminates any special fire protection requirements for installation – a constructive advantage over A2L and A3 refrigerants.

High efficiency

In combination with the OCHSNER horizontal table evaporator technology and fully modulating inverter operation, the AIR HAWK 208 achieves a SCOP of 4.46 and is classified in the highest energy efficiency class A+++. Flow temperatures of up to 65 °C are reliably achieved at an outdoor temperature of -18 °C – even at -24 °C, the system still delivers a flow temperature of 60 °C.

Low GWP and safety class A1

Rarely achieved combination: Low GWP and safety class A1 are a rare combination in the current refrigerant landscape for heat pumps. R513A meets both requirements simultaneously, making it ideal for applications where a non-flammable refrigerant is required while keeping the greenhouse effect as low as possible in case of leakage.

Efficiency in real operation

R513A shows its strength in combination with the fully modulating system technology of the AIR HAWK 208. The refrigerant operates thermodynamically close to R134a, a refrigerant that has been established for decades with mature compressor and component technology. This maturity translates into operational reliability and efficiency in real operation.

The design of the AIR HAWK 208 for the low heating loads of modern residential buildings results in nearly uninterrupted winter season operation. Switching cycles are minimized, and the compressor operates in its most efficient load range. In combination with the generously sized table evaporator and fully modulating speed control, a SCOP of 4.46 is achieved – a value that justifies classification in the highest energy efficiency class A+++.

Practically relevant are the low noise emissions. 28 dB(A) sound pressure at 3 meters distance allows installation in dense residential areas with small plots – even where air-to-water heat pumps were previously not an option. Thus, the AIR HAWK 208 is suitable for an installation situation that would be more complex to realize with other refrigerant solutions.
